The Vanishing Diya – A Diwali Mystery

In the old town of Vrindapur, people believed that every Diwali, the goddess of light visited one home in disguise. Most dismissed it as folklore—everyone except an 18-year-old girl named Meera.

Meera lived in an ancestral haveli with her grandmother, Daadi. The mansion was filled with antique doors, long corridors, and secrets buried in silence. That Diwali, something strange happened.

The First Sign

Two days before the festival, Meera found a dusty, brass diya in the attic. It looked ancient, with carvings of unknown symbols. Curiously, it wasn’t there the week before.

She asked Daadi about it.

Daadi’s face changed.

“This diya belonged to your great-grandmother,” she whispered. “It hasn’t been lit in 70 years… not since the night your grandfather disappeared.”

Before Meera could ask more, Daadi walked away.

The Disappearance

On Diwali night, the haveli was filled with lights and guests. Children were running around, sweets were being served, and the sky was alive with fireworks.

Meera decided to light the mysterious diya in the forgotten inner courtyard.

But just as she placed a match near its wick…

The flame lit on its own.

A chill ran down her spine.

The diya began flickering strangely, as if reacting to something unseen. And then, all around her, the other diyas in the courtyard started going out one by one—without wind, without touch.

Soon, only the ancient diya was burning.

And then she saw it.

A shadow. Moving across the opposite wall. Not shaped like any person present in the house.

The Secret Room

Terrified yet curious, Meera followed the shadow through the dim corridors. It led her to an old locked storeroom with an iron door.

But tonight, the lock was open.

Inside, everything was covered in white cloth. But the shadow stopped near a large trunk.

The diya’s light—still in her hand—cast a glow over it. Heart pounding, Meera opened the trunk.

On top was a bundle of letters. And below them—a photograph.

Her grandfather.

Standing with a woman no one in the family had ever mentioned.

Just then, footsteps echoed behind her.

She turned sharply.

Daadi stood there, eyes watery but calm.

“You were never supposed to find this diya,” she said softly. “Or the truth.”

The Revelation

Daadi confessed that Meera’s grandfather had vanished on Diwali decades ago—not because of tragedy, but by choice.

He had fallen in love with another woman and left secretly, leaving only the diya as a sign. The family never spoke about it to protect their honor.

“The diya reappears only when someone is ready to uncover the truth,” Daadi said.

Meera looked down.

The flame in the ancient diya was still burning—calm, steady, unwavering.

But the mystery wasn’t over.

As Daadi turned to leave, Meera noticed something on the photograph she hadn’t seen before.

In the blurry background… the same courtyard she had lit the diya in tonight.

Only this time, there was another shadow in the picture.

Not her grandfather.

And not the woman.

Someone… or something… else.

The diya flickered.

Almost as if it knew the rest of the story hadn’t been told yet.
